Police use CCTV in vandalism crackdown
Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Transport Operational Command Unit (TOCU) will be boarding route 229 services in Bexley and Greenwich armed with CCTV images of people suspected of vandalising the buses.
They hope that other passengers will be able to identify those involved, and details of offenders who are provisionally identified will be passed to BusTag- the TOCU’s CCTV criminal damage investigation team- to make a formal identification with a view to arrest.
Chief Superintendent Joe Royle, TOCU, said, “The Transport Operational Command Unit is dedicated to tackling crime and disorder on London’s bus routes. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated on the buses.
“Offenders will be caught and prosecuted with the aid of CCTV and any other means at our disposal.”
SafeBus will be supported by Home Office-funded ‘Safer Transport Teams’ in Greenwich and Bexley who will carry out their existing police patrols. They have been deployed to London’s 21 outer boroughs to provide reassurance and high-visibility policing on and around the bus network.
