Rapidly deployable network for use in emergencies
The fully-managed service uses satellite technology and a team of specialists to help disaster recovery teams when existing networks have been destroyed.
Hertfordshire firm Spectra developed SHADE (Spectra Hostile Area Deployable Environment) so it could be used anywhere in the world at short notice.
Troubled areas can be connected to the outside world using satellite communications that link with Spectra’s UK-based operations centre via the PSTN, internet and VPNs. AES or any other government-approved encryption technology can be used to secure the communications.
The fully-scalable system uses standard off-the-shelf technology like Cisco routers and VOIP phones, while Dell servers and ruggedised laptops are used for computing power.
Everything is built into flight cases that can be transported in aircraft holds without special cargo handling.
SHADE is also being marketed towards commercial enterprises to help them with business continuity planning.
