David joins the organisation with a wealth of experience, having been director for all Support to Business skills policies in the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) for five years. Working with Government ministers and departments (including HM Treasury and the Department for Education and Skills), David ran the Employer Training Pilot and was responsible for the design and delivery of the new employer’s skills service entitled Train to Gain.
Jaine Clarke (national skills director at the LSC) told info4security.com: “For five years, David has driven the development and successful implementation of the LSC’s employer-focused policy. In particular, David’s leadership of our new Train to Gain service has been fundamental to its success. Although we are sorry to see him go, it is excellent news that the learning and skills sector will be retaining his immense expertise and experience. We wish him every success in his new role”.
David’s long-term career interest has been promoting the critical role of improving the nation’s skills in order to benefit UK business. He has worked with major companies and SMEs in industries as diverse as the automotive, financial services, retail, healthcare and public sectors.
Speaking about David’s appointment, Linda Sharpe (the current chief executive at Skills for Security) commented: “I am delighted with David’s appointment and know that he can do a good job in taking Skills for Security forward to the next stage of its development. David brings skills and experience that will complement, and add value to, those held by the current directors and managers of our company. He has a strong employer focus, which will be very good news for the security business sector.”
As well as leading Government programmes, David has been an assistant principal in Further Education, a project manager for major commercial IT projects and has taught in schools. He has also provided consultancy to several Government departments and found time to run his own business. He is a qualified teacher, has a first class degree in physics and electronics and a Masters degree in Information Systems Design and Management.
Lord Stevens of Kirkwhelpington, chairman of Skills for Security, said: “We were determined, however long it took, to get the right person to succeed Linda Sharpe, who has done such an outstanding job in the formative period of our new skills and standards setting body. We are convinced that David Greer is that person.
