State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Skills for Security supports Government’s Apprenticeship Week

The Government recently announced its commitment to invest one billion pounds in apprenticeships throughout 2009-2010. The reason for this large investment is that more apprentices are required in order for the UK to have access to skilled workers and remain competitive.

The security sector in particular suffers from not being able to recruit and retain skilled workers. In this light, apprenticeships could help to rectify what is fast becoming a tricky situation.

Business benefits from apprenticeship programmes

Commenting on the current state of play, David Greer – chief executive at Skills for Security – told SMT Online: “The tough economic climate makes training and investing in your employees difficult, but more employers should consider the business benefits of apprenticeship programmes, particularly so given that the funding is available.”

Greer added: “It’s high time that the stale image of apprenticeships was erased. This investment from the Government is a sure sign of apprentices’ true value to business and the economy.”

The Government will be encouraging employers to learn about the business benefits of apprenticeship programmes during Apprenticeship Week, which takes place between 23-27 February. Various activities have been planned for that week, including a national employer event hosted by ministers, a special edition of the Apprenticeship Employer Newsletter and web, TV and radio coverage.

Security systems and guarding covered

Skills for Security has decided to celebrate Apprenticeship Week for the security sector by organising a number of free breakfast seminars focusing on the specific benefits of security systems and security guarding apprenticeships.
