Smashing plates

Hills Numberplates Limited has launched SecurePlate, which it says is “the world’s first anti-theft number plate”.

“It is the first system to meet the DVLA’s rigorous theft-resistant standards and is specially designed to break into pieces, ensuring the plate cannot be used on any other vehicle,” says sales and marketing manager Mark Debenham.

The Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service has fitted the plates to its fleet of cars, and VCIS head Supt John Wake endorses the concept. SecurePlate has been approved by Secured By Design, as well as Sold Secure, and independent tester of crime prevention products.

According to Government figures, 33,000 plates were stolen in 2004 and used by criminals for a variety of offences such as disguising stolen vehicles.
