Sodexo Justice Services triumphs at 2012 International Safety Awards

The team at HMP Bronzefield was recognised with an award of distinction, while the staff at HMP Addiewell, HMP Forest Bank and HMP Peterborough earned awards of merit. Sodexo Remote Sites in Scotland also picked up an award of merit.

HMP Bronzefield is currently one of only two prisons to house Category A prisoners in the female estate (female and juvenile Category A prisoners are called “restricted status” prisoners). The prison is staffed by approximately 160 prison officers which has a ratio of 60% female and 40% male officers to reflect the need for a women’s prison.

HMP Bronzefield is also a local prison, taking prisoners directly from the courts. Bronzefield holds a wide range of female offenders, including remand, sentenced and restricted status women.

Accommodation at Bronzefield is divided into four main residential units, each holding approximately 135 women. The prison also has a 12-bed Mother and Baby Unit, accommodating children up to 18 months old. Bronzefield has a Level 4 Healthcare provision with inpatient facilities for 18 women, as well as a smaller ten-bed Help & Direction Unit.

Compliance across the custodial environment

Sodexo Justice Services works closely with the Ministry of Justice, the Health and Safety Executive and the British Safety Council to demonstrate compliance and continuous improvement in Health and Safety across the custodial environment. This latest recognition is testament to the hard work being carried out by its members of staff.

Representatives from all four prisons attended the International Safety Awards Banquet at London’s Grosvenor House, which was held on Friday 18 May.

Tony Leech, managing director of Sodexo Justice Services, told Info4Security: “I’m delighted to see the deployment of Best Practice by our teams recognised in this way. Through these awards we are able to demonstrate our commitment to safety and security, which is critical to the success of our own business.”
