Songs about security: Been Caught Stealing

Songs About Security is back this week – as am I (very pleasant holiday, thanks very much) – with a tune that’s a personal favourite of my own, and Jane’s Addiction’s pop apex at the very dawn of the 1990s.

It’s a pretty straightforward assessment of the criminal mindset, and the reasons behind shoplifting (“when I want something, and I don’t want to pay for it”) and it earns bonus security points for the sample of dogs barking at the start of the single – dogs which the listener can only assume are guard dogs. It’s new ground for Songs About Security!

Been Caught Stealing came from Jane’s Addiction’s classic album Ritual de lo Habitual – they broke up after its release, with singer Perry Farrell going on to organise the Lollapalooza annual festival/tour, and forming his own band, Porno for Pyros, with drummer Stephen Perkins. Guitarist Dave Navarro was a sometime member of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Jane’s Addiction themselves reformed and released an album in 2003.

Enjoy this ridiculously catchy tune, and remember to keep nominating your choices for Songs About Security.
