Songs About Security: Fire

Fire is track 11 of 12 on acclaimed indie rock band Kasabian’s snappily titled third album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum.

Released on 1 June 2009 as the lead single from said album, it debuted at number three in the charts and gave the band their fourth UK Top Ten single.

The video is great and so is the song: two good reasons among many for me choosing it for your delectation!

Directed by the acclaimed W.I.Z, the official promo clip sees the band – singer Tom Meighan, guitarist and chief lyricist Sergio Pizzorno, bassist Chris Edwards and drummer Ian Matthews – attempt to rob the fictional West Ryder Union Bank using guitars instead of firearms.

Not surprisingly, that cunning plan is doomed to failure. The boys are caught on CCTV, there’s a bit of security action with the panic alarm being raised, the police surround the place and there’s a Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid-style denoument wherein Tom and Serge throw their ill-gotten gains (lyric sheets that look like money) into the air and attempt to slug it out with the law enforcers.

Football fans will be interested to learn that the track is played whenever Kasabian’s home town team, Leicester City, hit the back of the net at The King Power Stadium. It has also served as an official tune of the Barclays Premier League. So now you know.

With many security managers tasked to look after the fire prevention remit these days, I’d say they need an official tune that pays tribute to their efforts.

So here it is. Fire. By the magnificent Kasabian.

Sing it with Serge… “Move on, You got to move on, You got to hit ’em to the hip, And get your shake on…”
