Access control
The James Cook University Hospital is a major tertiary care centre providing leading edge acute hospital services on Teesside.
Part of the South Tees Hospital NHS Trust, the site was opened back in 1980 as South Cleveland Hospital. During the past four years, the hospital has benefited from a four-year PFI redevelopment phase and now serves 300,000 local people from Middlesborough, Redcar and Cleveland (caring for those with heart disease, cancer and kidney infections).
A dedicated access control system was required for the complex, complete with over 200 access points. Not only that, there was also a client desire that the system should be able to integrate with door alarms and a specialist baby tagging solution specified for the Maternity Unit.
Project installer Bayley Security worked alongside the client in choosing Bewator’s Granta system as the overall solution. Granta is a modular access control system that may be expanded to oversee more than 2,000 access points in a given installation. Managed via a PC-based software system, Granta is also future-proof for simple upgrades at the end user’s request.
At the James Cook University Hospital, as well as the main building, five other outbuildings have been incorporated into a single access regime. To reduce the cost of the installation, these outbuildings have been connected through an existing LAN fibre optic communications network. All fire doors and emergency exits are incorporated, enabling members of the Security Department to view on a separate graphic whether or not a door has been opened or left open.
