The Big Issue: Recycling
Many businesses now realise that acting in a socially and environmentally responsible way is more than just an ethical duty – it can have a profound effect on the long term success of the company.
Under the Data Protection Act, businesses are legally obliged to protect the confidential material they dispose of. It’s important to ensure that not only the client company but also the third parties they employ fully comply with the Act.
In light of new regulations under the Landfill Directive – legislation aimed at reducing the pollution from landfilled waste by diverting that waste away from landfills – many businesses are killing two birds with one stone and recycling. The secure destruction of confidential material in an environmentally friendly way should be a high priority in light of increasing environmental concerns, not to mention the alarming growth of identity fraud.
Confidential waste – including paper records, CDs and computer hard drives – should not only be recycled but shredded by an information destruction company holding the appropriate accreditation, and which is inspected to BS 8470 (the British Standard for the destruction of confidential material). Such companies can also ensure that you comply with your ISO 14001 obligations by making certain that all confidential material which can be recycled is subjected to this very treatment.
Recycling will increase a business’ success. Many partner organisatons will prefer to work with other firms who take their environmental responsibilities seriously. Reducing your energy use and adapting methods of waste disposal can help to cut costs and attract greater savings in the long-term.
