The CCTV Doctor: Interoperability

Q: What is interoperability?

A: It’s usual for a large building to have systems for CCTV, access control, building management, intruder detection and fire warning. Often these systems operate completely independently. But it is very beneficial in most cases to ensure that these systems are intelligent enough to talk to each other. The ability to change the operational status of one or more systems in response to changes on another system or systems is often referred to as ’cause and effect’ and defines what interoperability is all about.

Q: What sort of benefits can interoperability provide?

A: Examples might include linking CCTV and access control systems, so that if an attempt was made to use an invalid ID card or tag, a nearby PTZ camera would automatically swivel to record images of that person. There is a legal requirement that in the event of a fire, all exit doors, whatever their current status, must be unlocked. In addition, it is often desirable to move PTZ cameras to monitor the building exit/muster points and possibly increase recording rates and/or resolution. There are many other possibilities, of course, depending on the specific application.

Q: Is it easy to implement interoperable systems?

A: It’s getting easier. Leading manufacturers are now designing their newest products with interoperability in mind, but it’s still important to check the support that each product offers for interoperability before deciding to use it. The growing use of IP-based equipment is also helping, as most interoperable products use IP network connections as a convenient way of exchanging information. The best way to establish interoperability is to design it into the system from the outset – adding interoperability to an existing installation is not necessarily straightforward.

Q: Will I need special skills to implement interoperable systems?

A: A good knowledge of IP installation is a basic essential, but it’s also necessary to be familiar with all of the elements that make up the interoperable system. For example, if the CCTV is going to link to access control and intruder systems, the installer will need to be competent in all three of those areas. Training and broad in-house expertise are key issues for companies that want be involved with interoperable systems.

Q: Is interoperability all that important?

A: Interoperability is a buzz word in the industry, but in truth remains comparatively rare. Within two or three years this progressive approach to security systems will be commonplace. Interoperability is, therefore, very important; installers ignore it at their peril!
