State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

The Royal Abloy

Specified and installed by Rochester-based NT Security, integrated security package controls and monitors staff, student and visitor access at the Royal Holloway site through both interior perimeter doors serving the administration building in Egham.

A total of 49 battery-operated Smartair locks have been installed on the internal doors. These are controlled and updated by security personnel using three Update On Card Smartair readers and a portable programmer.

Access through the perimeter doors is controlled by an ARX system – a rather sophisticated online access control package that NT has linked to the university’s main IT system such that any alterations in terms of access rights may be swiftly actioned.

Each Smartair-controlled door has its own battery power source and built-in reader which identifies the user’s card, interrogates their access rights and then either opens the lock or refuses entry.

Door security is managed centrally from a PC which creates, stores and modifies user details.
