TPS to host counter-terrorism seminar

The seminar will cover bomb blast and hostile vehicle mitigation measures for the built environment, Critical National Infrastructure and crowded places, and will follow the themes laid down in the security review conducted by the Government’s security minster Lord West.

The event will also look at the latest thinking and Best Ppractice on the protection of buildings and occupiers from the risk of terrorism.

Yong Lu – professor of structural mechanics at Edinburgh University’s Institute for Infrastructure and Environment, and an acknowledged expert on the effects of blast on buildings – will be chairing the day.

The target audience

The event is aimed at corporate security personnel, developers and those with an interest in the protection of the built environment.

“The attack on Glasgow International Airport and the attempted attack on the Tiger Tiger night club in London serve to illustrate the nature of the threats we are facing,” commented Mark Whyte, TPS’ director of security consulting and explosion effects.

“Further announcements and initiatives are expected to be made by the Government in the coming months regarding counter-terrorism measures and the protection of our Critical National Infrastructure. While the scope of these announcements is still subject to speculation, they may include measures to strengthen the protection levels at critical infrastructure sites and seek greater input from the private sector.”

Topics to be covered

Topics covered will include the effects of blast on different types of structure, facades and glazing, counter-terrorism measures at the design stage, options for retrospective counter-terrorism measures and vehicle mitigation techniques.

The seminar will conclude with a presentation from a Lothian and Borders Police counter-terrorism and security advisor and a panel discussion period chaired by Professor Lu with input from leading counter-terrorism designers, engineers and policy makers. The venue is The Caledonian Hall, Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh EH3 5LR.
