Ward Security forms Safety Team to combat school security threats

Given the present climate of increased violence and knife-related crime, Ward Security has responded by forming a Safety Team to assist in dealing with these serious issues which are of great public concern.

The role of the Safety Team will be to search people or areas using both trained security officers and search dogs. Members of the dedicated team will be looking for weapons and illegal substances. Dependant on the instructions received from the client, any offenders caught will be reported to the police service or dealt with internally. Any weapons or illegal substances found will be handed over to the police service.

Threat areas to be covered

Threat areas would include premises such as educational establishments, local Health Authority premises, licensed premises or private functions, although priority is to be given to schools and colleges in the Kent region. With the Safety Team in attendance there is no need to involve teachers in the searching of students, which Ward believes is important in maintaining the ‘teacher/student’ bond.

Ward Security is to offer a training course for this safety programme, with regular refresher training and support if required by a given establishment.

The Safety Team will be staffed by Security Industry Authority-licensed personnel and fully-trained search dogs. All of the staff on the Safety Team will have been educated to Home Office standards in search techniques.

Home Office accredited instructor

The Safety Team has been trained by Peter Williams who is the dog section manager for Ward Security. Peter was a sergeant in the Metropolitan Police, where he served for twenty five years. During his career, Peter was a dog handler and instructor at the Metropolitan Police Dog Training Establishment, and is a Home Office accredited instructor in general purpose, explosives and narcotics search dogs. Williams has also completed the Home Office National Police Search Team course, and is a Home Office-qualified instructor in officer safety techniques.

Interested parties should contact Peter direct at Ward Security on (telephone) 01634 225117. Alternatively, send an e-mail: [email protected]
