Warnings over dangerous lighters
One in ten people in the UK have either had an accident with a pocket lighter or know someone who has.
It is estimated 100 million lighters are sold in the UK every year, with 85% of shops selling at least one model that does not meet European standards set down in 2006, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
A poll by APCO Insight for the European Federation of Lighter Manufacturers revealed that 13% of consumers either had an accident with a lighter or knew someone who had.
Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick, secretary of the all-party parliamentary fire safety and rescue group and a former firefighter, called on the government to properly enforce mandatory child resistance for disposable lighters.
Forty people are killed and 1,900 injured every year across Europe because of accidents with lighters, according to the report.
