We need a ‘top down’ approach to CCTV
That said, based on my own experience of teaching CCTV practice and principles, and from managing various CCTV systems around London, I have found that generally speaking knowledge of the laws affecting CCTV usage is fairly patchy.
At the moment, I run a CCTV Training Centre for NCP Services (‘New Centre for Training Excellence in CCTV’, News Update, SMT, October 2007, p13) where we offer CCTV and Data Protection Act training. I’ve found that many managers attending our courses have a limited knowledge of CCTV despite the fact that they’re already managing major installations and systems.
After attending one of our courses they generally ‘see the light’. We do need to educate more CCTV operators, but that education must start from the top.
