A foreign prisoner convicted of a terrorism offence is threatening to go to court to force the government to deport him from Britain.

Sabeel Ahmed pleaded guilty 13 days ago to failing to tell the police about information he had received about an attempted terrorist attack by his brother last June. Ahmed, whose brother died in the attempted suicide car bombing on Glasgow airport last summer, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey and agreed to be deported to India, where he was born.

Scuffles broke out and several protesters were arrested at the Olympic torch relay in Australia.

One protester ran into the path of the flame and sat down cross-legged about 10 metres in front of the torch runner before police hauled him away. The relay run around Canberra, the capital, was not interrupted.

General David Petraeus, the US commander in Iraq who implemented President Bush’s troop “surge” strategy, is to leave his post as part of a significant military shake-up in the region, it was announced yesterday.

General Petraeus will be nominated by Mr Bush to take charge of US Central Command in Florida, which oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The US Senate must first confirm him in his new position, and little opposition is expected.

Foreign travellers will have to provide fingerprints when they leave the US under a proposed new rule that the airline industry says will create further delays at American airports.

Non-US citizens would have to provide four fingerprints from one hand at airports before leaving the country under the proposal, which would also apply to cruise lines. After collecting the biometric data, airlines and cruise companies must send it to the US government within 24 hours.
