Five years after the US-led invasion, American forces have yet to bring security to Mosul, which is now the front line of the fight against al-Qaeda after President Bush’s troop “surge” brought a plunge in violence in Baghdad and surrounding areas.

The US defence department has banned Google from taking pictures of its military sites because it says it is a “potential threat” to security.
It follows the discovery of detailed of images of the Fort Sam Houston army base in Texas, on the Google Maps web service which clearly showed the location of barriers, headquarters and control points.
The search engine, which provides street maps, satellite pictures and three-dimensional of hundreds of countries around the world, has agreed to remove the offending photographs.

My next-door neighbour has installed a high-wattage security light in his garden. It should be triggered only by a burglar, but goes off for no apparent reason. Anything seems to set it off – trees blowing in the wind, a cat strolling on the fence – flooding my garden and kitchen with light at all times of day and night. We get on well with our neighbours and I am reluctant to mention it. What can we do?
