What the papers say… Tuesday, 8th May 2007

As of tomorrow, the old Home Office is no more and two new departments, one dealing with national security issues and the other the administration of mainstream justice, will replace it.

The United States needs “better tools” to prevent terrorists from Britain crossing the Atlantic under a visa waiver scheme, the country’s Homeland Security Chief said yesterday.

Michael Chertoff, who recently held talks with John Reid, the Home Secretary, said that the waiver scheme needed to be improved.

It has been described as America’s “soft underbelly”.

Laird, the engineering group, will hold its annual meeting on Friday. Last month it completed the sale of its security systems division to Lupus Capital. The GB pound 242.5 million deal will leave the group focused on its core electronics division.

Lord Stevens said the security service MI5 had recently suggested a figure of 2,000 but the true number was “probably nearer 4,000”.

Police and MI5 were “still too under-funded and undermanned to cope with the task they face in the decades to come. And that’s how long this will last,” he said.
