Edinburgh Castle gets surveillance upgrade

As part of a security upgrade at the castle, which receives over a million visitors a year, Indigovision’s local partner FPG Security Solutions replaced the existing analogue cameras.

A network fibre backbone and monitoring and recording facilities were also installed, completing the first phase of the upgrade.

A second stage, which involves adding up to 25 new internal and external fixed domes, is planned.

Indigovision’s IP solution aims to solve two problems posed by the castle’s dual role as an historic tourist attraction and a functioning military base. Firstly, it should allow the site’s control room to be relocated easily in the future and secondly, it will avoid disturbing the protected structure with extensive cabling.

The flexibility of IP video means that cameras, NVRs and workstations can be located at any point on the network.

Using Indigovision’s Control Centre video and alarm management software, the current control room monitors live video feeds from the cameras and recorded footage from a stand-alone NVR. A second workstation, also running Control Centre software, will be added to the manager’s office.
