Based on research by British astronomers, the T5000 passive terahertz imaging system is designed to help improve security at airports, tourist attractions and busy events.
ThruVision, the camera’s manufacturer, said it can detect objects hidden under a suspect’s clothes without revealing detailed pictures of their body or exposing them to the harmful radiation associated with X-rays. The camera also works on moving subjects, making it useful in crowded areas where bottlenecks occur.
The T5000 harnesses a form of low-level energy that has helped astronomers at STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory study dying stars. ‘T-rays’, which operate beyond the range of traditional X-ray scanners and metal detectors, can pass through smoke, clouds and some solid materials like clothing.
“Astronomers use T-ray cameras that can see through dust and clouds in space, revealing what lies beyond,” said Dr Liz Towns-Andrews, director of knowledge exchange at STFC.
“ThruVision uses them to see weapons hidden by clothing. This is a first-class example of how fundamental scientific research can be applied to benefit the whole of society.”
ThruVision’s CEO Clive Beattie said the system, which can see both metallic and non-metallic items, “will enhance any comprehensive security system deployment”.
ThruVision will be demonstrating the T5000 at the Home Office Scientific Development Branch Exhibition on the 12th and 13th March 2008.
