Home Office and research group team up for CCTV survey

Perpetuity Group wants to find out precisely which technologies are being used with CCTV – and to what extent – before learning how effective users think they are.

A statement on the consultancy’s website said, “At present there is a remarkable lack of information on the extent to which CCTV is used alongside other technologies – let alone the effectiveness of this technology.

“In light of this gap, Perpetuity is currently working with the Home Office Scientific Development branch to survey public space CCTV managers.”

The research will involve two main stages. Firstly, members of the CCTV User Group and the Public CCTV Managers Association will be quizzed on what they believe makes a CCTV scheme effective. Then, based on their answers and interviews with experts, Perpetuity will develop a tool to promote understanding of what constitutes operational effectiveness in public space CCTV.

“The purpose of the audit tool is to develop a set of questions that could be directed at CCTV schemes to assess their operational effectiveness,” said Tom Bourne, a research assistant at Perpetuity.

He told info4security the tool is likely to be a ‘skeleton’, designed as a walkthrough for test partnerships, rather than an advanced device for CCTV experts.
