But behind the glitzy, high camp musical drama that will be played out at the Hartwell Arena in Helsinki there is a security system to match the profile of the event.
Thousands of Eurovision fans from all over Europe will be there, placing exceptional demands on the newest and most advanced surveillance technology.
The event requires the outmost stability and performance from the surveillance system. Security personnel have to be able to recognise and prevent potentially dangerous situations before they occur.
Video surveillance, supplied by Helsinki-based Mirasys will be playing a critical role.
The company says its surveillance system combines “extreme precision with a virtually unlimited scalability and customizability”.
Hartwall Arena decided on implementing a solution based on Mirasys V series surveillance.
Says the arena’s director of security Leo Vilkka: “Our most important priority is to ensure the safety of the public. The best way to accomplish this is by recognizing potential disturbances before they can occur. The clear and precise video feed helps us solve cases of potential disorder with no uncertainty, and the wide scope of video surveillance enables us to effortlessly track even mobile disturbances”.
The Mirasys V series can consist of up to 5000 cameras and auxiliary devices. The software allows simultaneous use of analogue and megapixel quality devices in a single surveillance system.
“The Eurovision Song Contest is an exceptional event,” says Kim Langstrom, Mirasys sales director. “We definitely view the responsibility for providing the surveillance for the event as a matter of honour.
“In the optimal situation, video surveillance would not have to be utilized at all. However, if and when the need arises, the clarity and technical quality of the video feed are to everyone’s benefit.”
